Israel and Middle East- Arafat no longer relevant

This year saw more suicide attacks and sharper retaliation from Israel than ever. The war on terror has provided an extra tool in the hands of Israel and guaranteed that it can embark on any sort of brutal missions against Palestinians and US would not only support it but also endorse it and cramp Yasser Arafat further. As the Second Intifida entered second year in Sept 2001 the Palestinians felt encouraged by the events of Sept 11 and a new surge of suicide bombings started. These bombings were not only around Jerusalem and on military targets as it had been earlier, newer civilian targets in all parts of Israel including Capital Tel Aviv sent a clear signal. Palestinians are the hell bothered about the support Israel gets from America and War on terror. Yasser Arafat, the man was started it all after the Camp David talks as the second Intifida was not able to control it. Israel rightfully identified him as the roost of terror and went on to bomb his office quarters at Ramallah. The compound was blasted and a part of it under fire. He was under siege from Dec’01 to Apr’02 in his own offices. After every suicide bombing the tanks surrounded him to isolate him. At last Arafat started to condole the attacks on civilian targets. But he did not do anything on the ground or he was able to go anything to control it. At one of the meetings Arafat openly started to shout at Rajoub as acting for Israelis and wanted to occupy his post. Of late Israel is discussing that deportation of entire family of the suicide bombings as the solution.

Also diplomatically Arafat suffered irreversible setbacks. Israeli Prime Minister Arial Sharon openly declared that Arafat in an ‘enemy to the state of Israel’. He laid plans to isolate him. Americans rushed to Arafat’s rescue by getting a pledge from Israel not to harm him physically. As the suicide bombings continued Israelites were running out of patience and Sharon declared Arafat is no longer relevant as far as Middle-East peace process is concerned and pressed hard for his exile. So was Arafat not able to attend the Arab League Conference at Brunei, as threatened that once he gets out of Ramallah he can’t get back. Israel called for reorganization of Palestinian Authority and also for elections. Americans also saw these justifiable and called elections. The American Administration studied how Arafat can be sidelined from the process without much humiliation. It seems they have decided to give him a post like what a Prime Minister would be in office with the current constitutional amendments. Powell pushed hard with his case against Arafat in the International conferences.
